It is important to pair direct marketing processes such as email and social media. In your email to customers allow access to social media sites so that they can share the information with others, which can increase your opt-in rate. With WhiteFire, the Canadian Tire “Share and Win” campaign was able to successfully increase email opt-ins, as well as increase sharing of the brand on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The premise of the “Share and Win” campaign was that one only needed to go to the Canadian Tire website, enter their name and email address, then answer four questions about themselves. With print coupons being the highest social interest area at 32%, sales notifications at 28% and offers to win at 23%, Canadian Tire focused on coupon offerings. After filling out the form and opting-in to receive emails from Canadian Tire, Contestants were then able to choose as many of the following printable coupons:
- $10 off $40 for Marks Warehouse (Expires November 30, 2010),
- $30 off Canadian Tire Road Side Assistant membership (Expires December 31, 2010),
- Free Tire Rotation & fluid top up with Purchase of Oil Change (No expiry date).
The more someone shared the details of the contest, the better chance they had of winning an iPad or an iPhone 4. As a result of this, various people posted the contest details on their blogs, tweeted about it on Twitter, or shared it on Facebook. This increased brand awareness and traffic to the site. Social lift was optimized as original media produced on 5,867, or 49% of the registrants, while WhiteFire 6,046, or 51%. Social sharing accounted for 2,756 or more of the total registrants through WhiteFire, while social blogging attracted 3,290 people.
